Glastonbury Day 2: Jay-Z goads Gallagher
The rapper opened with an acoustic version of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ with Noel Gallagher’s “Hip
hop at Glastonbury is just wrong,” comments dubbed over the top, before roaring through a set that included ‘Big
Pimpin’’, ’99 Problems’ and ‘Hard Knock Life’.
Backed by a live band, the New
Yorker decided to rap alone rather than bringing out any special guests during his set as he covering Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’,
Estelle’s ‘American Boy’ and Amy Winehouse’s ‘Rehab’, despite the latter two performing
earlier on in the day.
At one point during the set, Jay-Z, real name Sean Carter, said to the
crowd: “I thought you didn’t want hip hop at Glastonbury?” Before asking for the lights to be turned onto
the crowd and adding: “what is there 180 to 200,000 people out there?”
He then peppered his set with
hits from most of his ten albums including ‘Girls Girls Girls’ and ‘H To The Isso’ before ending with
the Linkin Park mash up of ‘Encore’.
A set earlier on the Pyramid Stage Amy Winehouse
overcame her lung infection to perform a shambolic set that saw her struggle to even get her words out.
The troubled
singer played tracks off of both of her albums including ‘Rehab’ and ‘Love Is A Losing Game’ before
exclaiming that there are “Cunts like Kanye” around, referring to Chicago rapper Kanye West.
Winehouse
also attacked a member of the audience for allegedly trying to grab her nipple, which had fallen out of her dress. Some sources
claim she punched the fan, while other say she used her elbow.
Talking of which, Elbow performed
an epic set on the Other Stage as the sun went down. Consisting almost entirely of songs from latest album ‘The Seldom
Kid’, highlights included Richard Hawley guesting on ‘The Fix’ before their performance ended with an extended
version of ‘One Day Like This’ as the crowd chanted along with the fitting finale: “Throw those curtains
wide. Long day like this a year will suit me right”.
Hot Chip followed, kicking off their
set with a full orchestra covering some of their greatest hits, including ‘Over And Over’ and ‘Shake A Fist’,
before the full band reworked versions from their three albums to huge applause.
Battles were
another of the day’s highlights on the Park Stage, an extended version of their recent hit ‘Atlas’ proving
their defining moment.
Earlier in the day, Shakin' Stevens showed that the years may have
caught up with him as he sought to reinvent himself with new songs. Sadly, his ‘80s smash ‘Green Door’ was
the only song to get an impressive morning crowd truly moved.
Babyhead fared better in the early
hours of Sunday morning at Shangri La, packing their tent with their energetic brand of ska funk.
Glastonbury continues
throughout Sunday. Internet is proving hard to connect to so today’s round up may be delayed.
